Landscaping marketing in Kingston and Ottawa: booking spring work in the winter

Spring landscaping jobs get booked while there's still snow on the ground. Here's how Kingston and Ottawa landscapers can fill the calendar early.

Little Schoolhouse Garden Design

For landscapers in Kingston and Ottawa, the most important marketing month isn't May. It's January.

That's when homeowners are stuck inside looking out at a snowy yard, and they finally start planning the patio, garden or retaining wall they've been putting off. By the time the snow melts, the best clients have already booked their design consultations, and the companies that waited until April end up with whatever's left of the calendar.

Market on the homeowner's schedule

Landscaping has a pretty predictable buying cycle. From January to March, people research, save ideas and book consultations for bigger projects. From March to May, quotes get signed and spring cleanups fill up. Summer is when you're on site and when you should be capturing your best work. Fall brings cleanups, maintenance renewals and a chance to get ready for next year. If you only market when there's room in the schedule, you're usually marketing at the wrong time.

Be there when they start searching

Those winter planners are on Google searching things like "interlock patio Kingston," "landscape design Ottawa" or "how much does a retaining wall cost." Helpful content is how you show up for them. We've written a long-running series of blog posts for Mark of Excellence Landscaping, and the idea is simple: answer the questions homeowners actually ask about costs, materials, timelines and upkeep, honestly and clearly, and link those articles to your service pages. Our post on how long SEO takes explains why starting in the fall or winter pays off by spring.

It also helps to have a page for each main service and each area you work in. Someone in Kanata, Barrhaven or Westbrook wants to see that you work in their neighbourhood.

Your summer photos sell next year's jobs

The projects you finish in July are what win next year's work. Get in the habit of photographing every good job when it's done, in nice light, from the angles a homeowner would see from their deck or the street. A drone shot of a full backyard transformation or a short before-and-after video is especially strong. Book a professional shoot for your best few projects each summer, and you'll have months of content to use through the winter.

Reviews, your Google profile and past clients

When a homeowner narrows it down to two or three companies, reviews often make the decision. Ask every happy client for a Google review when the job wraps up, and keep adding project photos to your Google Business Profile all season. Our guides to Google reviews and Google Business Profiles walk you through both.

Your past clients are also your easiest spring bookings. A short email in late winter about spring cleanups, maintenance packages or an early look at your calendar can fill weeks of work with almost no ad spend. Check in again in the fall about cleanups and next year's projects.

Time your ads with the season

Google and Meta ads tend to work best for landscapers from late winter into spring, when people are ready to book. Promote design consultations in February and March, then shift to cleanups and maintenance in April. Keep the radius to the areas you actually want to drive to, and scale back once your schedule is full.
