Hiring an agency vs building an in-house marketing team

Both can work. The right choice depends on what you need done, how fast you need it and how much of your own time you can give it. Here is how to decide.

Hiring an agency vs building an in-house marketing team

Sooner or later, every growing business reaches the point where marketing cannot be squeezed into evenings anymore. The question becomes: hire someone in-house, or bring in an agency? Here is an honest look at both.

What an in-house marketer does well

  • Knows the business day to day and is always available
  • Can react quickly to what is happening in the shop or on site
  • Builds deep product and customer knowledge over time

The challenge is range. Modern marketing asks for strategy, writing, design, video, websites, search, paid advertising and reporting. Very few people are strong at all of them, and one hire often ends up stretched thin or leaning on freelancers anyway.

What an agency does well

  • A full team of specialists for the price of a service, not several salaries
  • Tools, software and ad platform experience already in place
  • No recruiting, training, vacation coverage or turnover to manage
  • Fresh perspective from working across many industries

The trade-off is that an agency needs a good onboarding and regular communication to understand your business. The best agency relationships feel like an extension of your team, not a vendor you hear from once a month.

Questions to help you decide

  • How many different skills does your marketing actually need this year?
  • Do you have someone in-house who can manage and direct a marketer?
  • How quickly do you need results?
  • Is the work steady all year, or does it come in projects and seasons?

The hybrid option

Many of our clients have someone in-house who handles day-to-day posting, customer questions and photos from the floor, while we handle strategy, websites, advertising, search and larger creative projects. It is often the most cost-effective setup for a business that is growing but not yet ready for a full marketing department.
